Fireworks Insulting Christianity?

Dear Editor,

Isn’t Chanukah the Festival of Lights?

In this week’s Vernon town council meeting a slice of the population questions if fireworks were appropriate to welcome in the holiday season at the town’s tree lighting ceremony. Further than asking if it was deemed appropriate she stated as a Christian she was offended. Chanukah is the festival of lights. What better way to honor this holiday with lighting up the sky. We light one candle each night to remind of us of those who suffered at the hands of oppression long, long ago. The Jews in the Temple only had enough oil for their lamps to last one night, yet by the hand of God the oil lasted eight nights, thus the festival of light.

On a Christian note, the star of Bethlehem shone bright as the baby Jesus was given to us by the divinity of God. What better way to look to the heavens and give thanks than fireworks. Let us as a community lift our eyes to the heavens and welcome the season of giving. All religions, all faiths all peoples. How in any way can this be distorted to be insulting? Cast your personal and political dispersions aside, and please let us join with one another in the true sense of holiday, and community.

Sincerely,

Ron Meyer, Vernon Resident and Contributing Reporter for TRR
